Eligibility
Eligibility Criteria
Membership is open to undergraduate students in the College of Arts and Sciences and in exceptional circumstances (as described below) to students enrolled in undergraduate professional degree programs.
The following students are eligible for membership:
- Students in the College of Arts & Sciences who have completed at least 75 semester hours of graded academic course work in the liberal arts and sciences at UNC Chapel Hill. The quality point average of the graded liberal arts and sciences course work must be at least 3.850 (please note that this is not necessarily the same as your cumulative gpa).
- Students in the College of Arts & Sciences who have completed at least 105 semester academic course hours in the liberal arts and sciences, at least 45 of which must have been graded course work taken at UNC Chapel Hill. The quality point average of the graded liberal arts and sciences coursework must be at least 3.750 (please note that this is not necessarily the same as your cumulative gpa).
- Students in undergraduate professional degree programs who have completed at least 105 semester academic course hours, at least 90 of which must have been in the liberal arts & sciences AND at least 45 of which must have been graded course work in the liberal arts and sciences taken at UNC Chapel Hill. The quality point average of the graded liberal arts and sciences coursework must be at least 3.750 (please note that this is not necessarily the same as your cumulative gpa).
No grades made at an institution from which a student has transferred shall be included in determining a student’s eligibility.
Because Phi Beta Kappa honors excellence in the liberal arts and sciences, applied or pre-professional coursework shall not be considered in determining eligibility. This stipulation excludes professionally focused courses and courses devoted to the acquisition of practical skills.
The quality point average shall include all academic course work in the liberal arts and sciences taken and counted toward the candidate’s degree (physical activity grades and hours are not included). Grades received on courses taken after the candidate has received his or her degree shall not be counted.
Enrolled students are AUTOMATICALLY considered for eligibility each term. Students should request a manual review of their eligibility if (and only if) they meet one of the three criteria below:
- studied abroad and have TREQ credits on their transcript
- are a Robertson Scholars and have ROBT credits on their transcript from courses taken at Duke
- graduated in a previous semester
Students who meet one of these conditions should click below to request a manual review of their eligibility. Such requests must be submitted by August 15 (fall) and January 15 (spring).
